Yeah, the One Laptop idea sounds like a good one. It does sound ideal.

Coffee and a tech question: forgive me if it's a little unintelligible; it's early.

So, my free Office I got with the laptop runs out in a few days. I've heard good things about Google docs, but I wanted to get people's opinions.

I use Word and Powerpoint -- is it ok to just switch off to GoogleDocs? Is it comparable? Can I still access and edit my Word and PP docs?

Thanks, all.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Google Docs will definitely handle Word, but I don't know about PowerPoint.

ION, I walked past the AT&T store that's on my way to work this morning and there was a line all the way down the block! One of my co-workers was there and he said people had been lining up at 4am. There was an AT&T guy there giving out vouchers for people to come back at noon when the second shipment came in, but even then they were sold out of the 32GB models for at least a week, so...argh. No new phone for Jess.

In terms of features and experience, I'd say it isn't comparable. It will handle basic stuff and be able to read files, but it's several steps back from the actual applications. Worth a shot, but IMO the $90 for Office Home and Student edition is worth the money especially if you have more than one computer (it's a license for up to 3 computers).

Oh, it's only (only!?) $90? That's better than I thought.

I think I'll just go ahead and get that. I will have to wait a couple of weeks, but my PP's for the classes are already made up; I can tweak them at the office.

Thanks, all.

The status is NOT quo.

I think Home and Student is actually $146, but a must have, IME.

Well, mine cost $90, but I got it during back-to-school season and it was discounted.

Crap, it's $125 right now. [link]

I'll bet you'll see it on sale in about a month.

That's still a great deal for the product.

Mine is 2007 as well, maybe Microsoft upped the price a bit with 2010.
