She should be able to go to project gutenberg on the kindle and download it directly onto the kindle.

The only confusing part is that the connection to go online is under a really weird thing on the menu (sorry, I do not have the kindle with me, but I remember it being a pain)
She can also get free books directly from Amazon-- I have been known just to sort by lowest price first, and you will find a whole bunch of books for "$.00".

I have an external hard drive that was working fine this morning and now won't mount on the desktop. How hard should I be panicking right now, given that the drive in question contains an awful lot of un-backed-up really important material on it?
Have you tried it on another computer and/or tried rebooting?
Does the drive spin up? If not, try jiggling it when you plug it in - that may be enough to get it spinning one more time.
Oh, can you try a different cable?

Huh. Hotter than normal? That might mead the drive motor is almost dead. Or dead.
Is it powered by USB? If it allows a separate power adapter, try that. (Some USB ports on computers aren't really powerful enough.)
If you get it going, try to get everything off it ASAP.
I thought I read something about putting a balky drive in the freezer to get it going - you might google that.

you might try to move the drive into another enclosure and see if that will work.
If the drive is dead, what are the chances the data could be recovered by a professional?
I don't know much about that, but if it'd the drive motor, I'd think they'd be able to replace it - at least to get the data off for you.
