Kindle question: Mom has one, but no computer worth speaking of. I don't have one, but do have computers. I have the details to her account online. Can I send her kindle things from Project Guttenberg/plain text types of things with no cost to her? Or can that only be done by connecting the kindle to a computer locally? Trying to be a good son, remotely.

No. If you use her kindle address that goes over the air, it is something like .10 a MB. Cheap, but not free.
If you use her kindle free email address, it is free, but you have to connect it to a computer to download the information.
thanks for the info le nubian. I was hoping there was a way I could give her stuff remotely. It looks like it would charge her credit card, and she doesn't make enough. Although, Alice In Wonderland from Project Gutenberg plain text is only 163 kb, so that would still be cheaper than buying a new book.
She should be able to go to project gutenberg on the kindle and download it directly onto the kindle.

Download eBooks directly to your device over the Internet. If your device is Internet-enabled, just visit the catalog page for a book, and download one of the formats your device can display. Here is a sample catalog page: www.gutenberg.org/etext/11. Use the author/title search boxes on every page at www.gutenberg.org to find eBooks you are interested in.
The only confusing part is that the connection to go online is under a really weird thing on the menu (sorry, I do not have the kindle with me, but I remember it being a pain)
She can also get free books directly from Amazon-- I have been known just to sort by lowest price first, and you will find a whole bunch of books for "$.00".
omnis, you could give her an amazon gift card and if she applied that to her acct, she wouldn't even notice that she was being charged.
I have an external hard drive that was working fine this morning and now won't mount on the desktop. How hard should I be panicking right now, given that the drive in question contains an awful lot of un-backed-up really important material on it?
Have you tried it on another computer and/or tried rebooting?
Does the drive spin up? If not, try jiggling it when you plug it in - that may be enough to get it spinning one more time.
Oh, can you try a different cable?
I've rebooted twice. The drive is *really* hot right now, so I'm going to let it cool down before I try swapping cables.

Huh. Hotter than normal? That might mead the drive motor is almost dead. Or dead.
Is it powered by USB? If it allows a separate power adapter, try that. (Some USB ports on computers aren't really powerful enough.)
If you get it going, try to get everything off it ASAP.
I thought I read something about putting a balky drive in the freezer to get it going - you might google that.
