Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!

I have been witness to this on two occasions. Makes my toes curl just to think about it.
What? Oh, right. No, I haven't a tech question. Don't get up, I'll go now.
The power cord for my laptop has a tear in the insulation, and the only way it works is if it's bent at a really particular angle. I'm pretty sure I can fix this with some electrical tape, but I don't have any electrical tape right now and I really don't feel like going out. I've got another power cord at my office, but I can't get it until tomorrow. How much am I risking fire if I just use the damaged one and keep an eye on it?

I'd just make sure the frayed part of the cable was not resting on anything flammable.

Or near any water.
Speaking of which, I managed to spill water into a Dish Network receiver this morning. I unplugged it and overturned it to get the water out and put a fan on it to dry it out.
But, there was a smell and a little puff of something. The satellite company told me to leave it unplugged for a day and try it again.
Do you think I have fried it?
My sister, who owns the house and pays the bills is out of town. Will she kill me? Stay tuned!
OK, well I got something kind of rigged together with Scotch tape, but this so isn't going to last. It'll only work if the cord is bent right where the insulation is frayed, so right now, I've got tape around the frayed insulation, and then the wire taped to the side of my computer to keep it bent the right way, but I think I'm going to have to either get a new power cord at home or start bringing my office one back and forth.
Do you think I have fried it?
yes.
Will she kill me?
I hope not. I enjoy your posts!
I'll text from my secret hiding place.
What does the random and frequent occurrence of Open DNS errors mean? One url will throw the error repeatedly, then I go somewhere else for 3 minutes and come back and it's fine. I'm running current Firefox on Mac OS X (and the other internet annoyance of late is how damn herky-jerky anything on Youtube is any more - did I mention the machine is 7 years old?)
Do you have Comcast?
