"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Are the Martin Morales Spider-Man graphic novels a good idea for a fourteen year old?

"...and then Legolas and the Hulk destroy the entire Greek army." - Penny Arcade

Well....Miles' story starts with the death of the teenage Peter Parker of his universe. And Ultimate Green Goblin, who is a giant scary-ass monster, plays a big role early on. That's about as intense as it gets, so if the kid can handle that sort of thing they should be OK.

So I read the first issue of the new Boom! Buffy comic.

Um.

So it's very much "Ultimate Comics Buffy" with familiar people and things in new and old combinations. Anya runs a magic store patronized by demons, she seems to be slotting into Willy the Snitch's position; Drusilla is some kind of vampire Mafia queen(Spike doesn't appear at all yet).

Buffy is recognizably Buffy, the tension between the need for the Slayer and her own wants is in there. Joyce has one scene, but she's positioned as the kind, fun parent; Giles, on the other hand, is in serious Season One mode - he's practically Wesley-esque. Xander is funny without saying anything too obnoxious yet, and Willow.....

When I saw the character designs, I had the awful feeling I was going to have the most trouble with Willow, and I wasn't wrong. Between the short hair, the midriff outfits, and the fact that she's out not only to herself, not only to Xander, but to Buffy who they just met, it's hard to shake the feeling they've just bolted on College Willow in place of High-School Willow. If we have to skip a huge chunk of someone's character arc, I'd rather do it with Giles.

Aww, geez. I remember I would go to St. Marks Comics almost every week in the 90s, grab a pile of alternative comics, (I got a comic signed by Ariel Schrag, who was working behind the counter at the time), and then I would head over to See Hear and pick up some more zines.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

St Marks? NOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooOO!

I seriously learned to comics there.

The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

I really enjoyed The Umbrella Academy, even with the OMG CLIFFHANGER ending, But it's been almost a week and I am still suffering the earworm from the first episode.

RIP, Vertigo Comics.

Arguably, the imprint has been dead since 2013, when Karen Berger left.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

That would be my take.

Well, it took me a little longer than it should have, but I'm going to put my foot down and declare that Tom King is bad. He's a bad Batman writer, and he's an even worse Wally West writer.
