I'm going to guess prior prep with photos of the sidewalk from the intended vantage point and at least a sketchy outline plotted to get the perspective right. If the artist is doing that on the spot from mental image alone I'd be gobsmacked

Bryan Talbot has a new book out with his wife, Mary, about Lucia Joyce (daughter of James).

I really loved his Alice in Sunderland which I recommend.
