His most autobiographical creation was the golem-like Thing, who was constantly thwarted trying to find a cure for his grotesque appearance.

I finished the last book of Scott Pilgrim last night. I really liked the series, and am waiting impatiently for the movie.
I agree with P-C that book 5 is pretty depressing, but in context I like it, and I really liked the Kim Pine bits.
