Matt, I've been trying to figure out who it could be, and your theory is AWESOME.

The only two candidates I can think of are Ethan and Doc, but Ethan fits the various clues we've seen about Twilight better. Doc doesn't strike me as an infiltrate-the-military-and-use-technology type of guy .
Isn't Ethan dead, as of near the beginning of the series? Of course, that could have been a ruse.
Who's Doc ?
Joel Grey from "Forever" and "The Gift." The worshipper of Glory who helped bring Joyce back briefly and opened the gate that Buffy died to close .
Oh!!! Right! I forgot all about him.
So, Teppy (or whoever else) - if one were writing dialogue for people working in a comic store, I'm thinking that it might be reasonable for them to be bitching about the demise of Blue Beetle. What else might they be disgruntled about/think is awesome?
If they are DC fans, they would be talking about Blackest Night, presumably. Or still complaining about Final Crisis.
If you are a guy working at my comic-book store, you are lamenting not going to Comic-Con and getting the limited-edition He-Man and Skeletor action figures that are now going for exorbitant prices on eBay. If you are another, you are bitching about G.I. Joe. (My point being that people working at a comic-book store could also be talking about a whole slew of non-comic geeky things that you may be more familiar with.)
I think this counts as "other media" - My Little Horrible Ponies
Bless you - yeah, they'll most likely talk geeky in general, but I was a bit floundering at my lack of up-to-date knowledge about comics, since that is liable to crop up.
Also, suggest me some comic book heroes who haven't yet been made into movies? Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Aquaman, yeah? Nightwing?
