I just started reading Y: The Last Man a few days ago. Yes, it rules, though not quite as much as Ex Machina!
We are so the other way around on this issue. I love Ex Machina, but it's probably my least favorite of BKV's series.
Glam, my friend also suggests The Exterminators by Simon Oliver, which I haven't read. It's "bugs rather than pathogens, but is still very wacky end-of-the-world about the whole thing." A review I just found describes it thusly: "The Exterminators is literature of the Apocalypse delivered through black humor and social class commentary."
The Exterminators is Teh Awesome.
Reading the first volume I thought "this would be such a great TV show" because it had so many character-driven side stories, and the dialogue is great. And of course, then I found out it was originally pitched as a series. And now it may get a second life as one. But anyway: it's ridiculous and silly and scary and I hadn't thought of it as apocalyptic but yeah.
I'll also throw in Army@Love, which is... as apocalyptic as DMZ is, at least. (And I heart DMZ). Army@Love has more of an absurdist/Catch 22 take on it.

I've seen it and been intrigued, but now I do want to give it a whirl sometime.
I've also been recommended DMZ, but I'm less sure about that one. Then again, I should probably stop pretending I might actually not like something.
Thanks for the recs! Also, if you haven't checked it out, Therefore Repent is really cool, too.
You know, I went into Comic Relief on Thursday, and it took me forever to find Ex Machina. I'm so used to comic book stores organizing by publisher. They had a rack for "superhero comics" and a rack for "literature comics" (what the hell?) and then I finally found Ex Machina in the very back mixed up with everything else, alphabetically.

You could've asked. They always have somebody at the front, and somebody at the information desk in the middle.
I know, but I didn't want to ask since I did not intend to buy the issue, just read it. I wait to buy trades. So far, no one has ever given me shit—I make it a point to buy stuff intermittently to support the store—but I still feel sneaky and bad about it.
I did ask for food recommendations, though. My friend wanted noodles, and the guy in the middle told us to go to Boat House.
