Comics Journal used to run a feature showing panels that comic book artists would rip off from other artists. About 70% of them were Jack Kirby ripoffs because he was such a master of composition.
eta: I have a theory that certain aesthetic gifts are easy to cultivate and others are more rarely distributed. For example, many people can learn how to draw but relatively few people have a knack for composition. Likewise, I think narrative is the rarer gift in writing and melody is the rarer gift in music. Which is why people copy storylines and melodies from other people so often. This is, admittedly, a half-baked idea but I still suspect there's something to it.
