my mom even calls us by the names of her siblings
Mom called me the dog's name once. His name was Butch.
Our family story is that once my mother ran through all the names in our family (there's only the two sisters) and got to Blueberry (the parakeet) before she got to my sister's name.
Everyone always mixed us up, and we were seven years apart, but that was because of the whole being Japanese in a tiny midwestern town thing.
And yay for the announcement! I'm so excited for the twins. Ultrasounds are completely fascinating to me.
About the publicness of it all; our friends who did in vitro had their first "baby" picture up on their fridge -- it was just cells. I remember standing mutely in front of it just profoundly moved. Something about the otherness of it all, about how amazing it is that we have this journey from just a few cells to, you know, us.

We've only had the tiny birds-in-a-cage, and nobody had to ever call them by name, the names that we gave them, which we tried to make as long and complicated as possible, so we never got there.
Whenever my mom does that, I answer "yes, SisterOfMomName".

I can't get over how amazing it is. It's as if all the laws of conservation are being broken in order to make this possible. Matter, energy, whatever. And yet, that's the basis of everything that can happen, well, pretty much, with everything.
Oh, and newborns are little aliens, in a way, as well. It takes time, for most of them, to become those cuddly pink adorable things, like Matilda in the pictures that Lee just posted a few posts ago. At the beginning they look and even act quite differently. It's fascinating.
oh fun news to read so early in the morning. mac woke up at 2:20, I think with a bad dream, so I went to lay down with him and have just now escaped (which is really how I think of it - trying to share twin bed space with a fidgety/tossy turny 5 year old is a form of torture). Since I am supposed to be up at 6 to get ready for work anyway, it seemed a wee silly to try and grab more sleep. Also? The cats thought movemnt at 2:20 was a signal of morning and are doing the make noise to get the humans moving game. have I said grrr yet, because grr.
Oh, msbelle, sorry about the not-so-good not-so-morning-yet. Can you spoil yourself with something relly good before it's actually really morning, like a hot chocolate or the like? You deserve it.
How are the cats accepting mac, now that you've mentioned them?
Kat, that is the most awesome news in ever! Millions of congratulations to you and Lori!
Ultrasounds rock (at least, once you've gotten the all clear and the scary stuff is ruled out). Painless, fascinating, and (depending on whether your hormones are doing the wacky) can make you all misty with tears of amazement and happiness. What more could one ask for from a medical test?
Happy Birthday, shrift!
Kat, congratulations to you and Lori!!! That's of the awesome!
Which, poor twins, they will have that for the rest of their lives
Oh, so they're identical?
It doesn't matter if they're identical, or even three years apart. People have been getting me and my sister confused all our lives. When we were five and eight (or so) Mom took us all to get identical Dorothy Hamill cuts and then people would say, "Oh what cute boys you have! Are they twins?"
My twin sister and I are fraternal and nobody has ever had an issue telling us apart--mostly because I'm bigger than she is but also because I have brown hair and she has blonde hair. I feel sort of like a giant, cloddish moster next to her because she's so wee (hands & feet, especially: I wear a size 7 1/2 ring and she wears a 4!). I was also two pounds heavier when we were born, so I had that going for me early on. Being a twin is cool, though. You never feel alone and it's a feeling that never goes away, no matter how far apart you are.
Good luck with the pregnancy, kat.

Oh, god. BTDT. And grrrrrrrr.
Congrats, Kat & Lori! That's lovely news to start out 2007 with.
Alas, I have woken up groggy and ready for more sleep at 7 AM. Why couldn't I have done that at 1:40 when I got up for most of an hour without the least bit of sleepiness? Start behaving, body, damn it, or there'll be no more cookies!
Happy Birthday to Shrift!!
Contrats to Kat & Lori!!
