Actually, Mormons are now a minority in SLC. Provo, ie, where I live, is the stronghold of Mormons. Though SLC does have the big fancy buildings.

It's all those heathen Californians moving in who love mountains and low crime rates and all that. They've brought in Starbucks and pagan stores and gay clubs and all that. The East Side of town, especially the east side of the central portion, is very liberal. "Fortunately", the west and south sides continue to look with deep distrust at anyone who can't trace their Utahn ancestry back to people who came across the prairie hauling handcarts.
