Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

The power wielded against people is not just the exploitive gov't, but often their own cultural practices.

It's exploitation of the poor and powerless nonetheless. This isn't an ongoing danger for the daughters of the wealthy anywhere and likely never has been on any noteworthy scale.

When women (and girls) have the ability to contribute economically to the survival of their families with something besides their hymens their lives improve. You don't get sold to a brothel to feed your siblings when you're all in school and eating there. A family doesn't embrace the "honor" of being repeated rape by a "holy" man if she's going to end up with a job at a call center. Even a woman locked behind walls begins to earn clout in her community if she has a loom and a market for her goods... and that woman has far more ability to say "no" to her daughter being genitally maimed if she's paying the mortgage. And the daughter doesn't become a unmarried unmaimed enormous financial hardship if SHE has the ability to pay the mortgage.

None of this is as glamorous or immediate as an armed invasion... but it actually works.

Today will be a good day, won't it?

Well, despite the snow and the asshat, I wasn't late to work this morning and I'd happily been chatting with a friend I ran into on the bus. I brought my lunch so I don't have to venture out into the storm if I don't want to. My iPod is fully charged and I'm listening to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Things could be worse.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

For the person who sees mini-bottles and thinks "yes, but could I take it fishing?"

Pocket Shot is a brand new way to enjoy your favorite hard liquor. No longer will you need to carry full size bottles. Gone are the breakable glass mini bottles. Now you can have it one shot at a time, any place, anywhere.

Each Pocket Shot is sealed in a near unbreakable, flexible, squishable, pocket stuffable pouch making them perfect for active activities, outdoor adventures, and glass restricting venues.

I'm listening to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

oooooh! motorcycles! I think I should buy either a new car (which I will have to do as it is way more practical) or a motorcycle (which I theoretically want to do but is totally impractical and unlikely).

Oof. I have a full teaching day, then 4 hours at UCLA teaching, then 8 hours at UCLA teaching tomorrow and then a Sunday of Writing a paper. oof.

oof is right.

Gone are the breakable glass mini bottles.

Er, haven't those been gone for a while? I'm used to seeing smashed plastic booze bottles in the gutter all the time.

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

Oy. So much for avoiding the snowstorm--we got socked with it really bad out here in the NW 'burbs. I had to clean about a foot of snow off of my car while standing in drifts up to my knees (no boots yet, so my gym shoes are soaked), and then it took about 50 minutes to drive the five miles to work, where there are four people out of almost 20 working in my department this morning (both my boss and co-worker are telecommuting).

I just sent a request to my boss asking if I can take a 1/2 day today, because the roads were so icy coming in that I don't see them improving much before 3:00 this afternoon, even if the storm stops by noon like they're predicting.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Today sucks. And people suck. And winter. Winter sucks.

Damn it. I should have loaded that vid onto my iPod. What was I thinking?!

It looks like it's stopped snowing, at least downtown.

I think I'll go heat up my lunch and then read Fandom Wank.

I'm still waiting for the gale force (huh, I wonder if that's a defined value) winds from hell to descend.

Right now it is the same drippy warm gray it's been all morning.
