Oh, at first it was confusing. Just the idea of computers was like — whoa! I'm eleven hundred years old! I had trouble adjusting to the idea of Lutherans.

February's good, Sean. Anytime we can see you.

Natter 9 is interesting.

Shawn, everything about Farscape is great except the music.

Emmett and I went down by the water toward the foot of the Bay Bridge. There's a place where you can go down concrete steps right into the water and he's utterly fascinated by the ocean being Right There.

His observations on natural phenomena:

Emmett: I know what made the sky.
Me: What's that?
Emmett: Water. Water made the sky. Water just made itself because it's water. [thoughtful pause] People make soap. That's where soap comes from.

That's beautiful. He's determined a fundamental element. He could be a pre-Socratic philosopher!

By the teen years he'll probably be up to the Scholastics. Expect some truly tortuous arguments as to why he should get to borrow the car on the weekend.

I'll mention this to him tomorrow. I promise you he will snort. Usually I try to explain the real science behind his speculations but he wasn't all that wrong here. People do make soap.

A whistle is to make people jump

Hey! Did I miss all the Names Natter? Because I love me some Names Natter!

I should NOT be here. SO MUCH WORK TO DO (tomorrow).

But, I have a great names story. My DH's grandmother was named Marian Gertrude, which I think is a beautiful name. She married the eldest son, the younger son was already married. Her MIL (DH's great-grandmother) was pissed that elder son, who was OBVIOUSLY supposed to stay unmarried and support her the rest of her life, didn't like Marian Gertrude. The younger son's wife was also named Marian, so evil GGma said "We can't have two Marians! We'll call you ... Gertie." And so it was.

I loved her dearly. She and I would talk about sewing and when she died DH's family gave me all of her sewing stuff. I use buttons from her stash all the time and think of her fondly. Also, we were the same size so I use her patterns. What a dear woman. But I wish I could have kicked evil GGMa in the shins.

Uh, Grandparents: Henry Crawford and Prudence Azalea, Ivan and Florence.

Emmett would've been Azalea if he was a girl (pronounced Aza-Lee, southern styley).

Sorry Lee. You'll be getting a visit when we're next here as well. It should be a whole group thing. I haven't seen my SF peeps (barring the all-too-brief SF2F stop-in) in TOO EFFING LONG.

high trees catch a lot of wind

Hi folks. I've not been in Natter before, not even lurked, as I have limited time on the net each day, and felt I should get to know folks in the show threads first..."Natter" in the thread title made it pretty clear that the Natter thread was more of a general community place. But today (or last night), Sean K mentioned the discussion of what this board is about over in the Buffy thread, so I've stayed home to read Natter 9 and 8. I'll be seriously late for work, but I can blame it on the snow or something.

I'm upset, I guess. You know Myers-Briggs type? I'm an ENFP, and it really kills me that you guys are dissatisfied with how the Buffista community is now. I wonder if my posts have contributed to that feeling; I know I tend to come off as negative, but as I tried to explain in another thread, I criticize out of love. If I don't love a show or movie or whatnot, I don't even bother thinking about it. So please let me apologize if my posts have in any way made this an unhappy place for any of you.

Another thing I learned in Natter is that there's a core group here who have been together for quite a long time, apparently. I'd gotten that vibe from the show threads, but having it confirmed helps me understand a little more of the undercurrents here. It does make me feel a bit like a party crasher, but it also helps me understand where you are coming from.

This is the only online forum I visit - again, limited Internet time. No LJ for me, etc. I've checked out a few others, but the moment I read the level of intellectualism and goofiness, the erudition and snarkiness here, something really clicked for me. All ages, genders, orientations, political stances seem to be represented here, as well as many countries and cultures. I wish I could stay here all day and find out stuff - about Australian fauna, political views, family trees, music. Oh yeah, and the Buffyverse. And I laud you all on making a board where the various conflicting views don't end up in flamewars. People do disagree here, but don't seem to take it personally. Too much. I know I've taken a few things personally, and I know that I waver between pre-editing my posts (which usually means not posting) or just throwing my unprocessed ideas out there (which usually means annoying someone).

I guess what I'm saying is, you guys have a good thing here. And because all members can participate, you stand a good chance of continuing it as something that you will all be able to enjoy for years. It looks like people have made "meatspace" friends from this board, and that is of the good. For my part, I will redouble my efforts to be a helpful and positive contributor here...and I'll try to be sensitive enough to the gestalt to leave if I'm not helping.

In closing, I'd just like to say that I watched City of last night, and it ROCKED.

(ETA: JonB, happy birthday! And many happy returns)

Happy birthday, Jon! I recently decided if I died suddenly you could be one of the handful of people to pick through my record collection. Scola gets dibs on my comics though.

One of us! See Raquel, you're a classic example of somebody sensitive enough and clued in enough to think that you're the problem which means you're not the problem.

I AM NOT A PANDA.

Big Damn Evil, Sir.

Best thing in the world? Fresh mozzarella torn on to a bowl of diced oraganic tomatoes and tossed with basil, olive oil, and balsalmic vinegar, with a little fresh cracked pepper and kosher salt.

Yum.

"Hell may be other people, but sometimes, if you're lucky, that also describes heaven." - PMM

I have never been entertained or amused by a clown. Impressed sometimes, but it's often overshadowed by my need to watch from the hall.

I typically feel that way as well. Imagine my surprise when my mom decided to take clown training and be a clown as a hobby. She’s got the whole outfit and everything. Her clown name is Gertrude. She’s actually kind of cute, though – she has big curly red ponytails. And, she doesn’t do the obnoxious, invading personal space things. That’s just so not her. Actually, most people who know her can’t believe she could even be a clown. She pretty much just makes fun balloons, and the kids always loved her.

I just staggered in from a New Year's party and read the news about Gus. He was such a smart, funny and snarky person. I remember his first bar posting.

Again, thanks for letting us know, kimi. I was thinking about him not long ago and was wondering how he was. My thoughts go out to you and Seamus. Gus was so proud of the work he was doing.

I wish I could be more articulate, but it's considerably past my bed time. I guess I'd better stop crying and go to bed.

I'm glad it's 2007. A lot of things about 2006 sucked.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Hey, we're here all year. Maybe longer.
It's this thing we do...

Just spent a few hours on the phone with an almost friend. Now thinking of falling asleep. Or falling and then going to sleep. In any way, being sure that it is the next year as the next year should be nicer than the last year. It would almost have to be...

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Oh my God.

It doesn't seem real. I hardly knew him, and I don't think we ever exchanged more than a few words, but he was just...Gus. Who would never let the Firefly thread die. Who said the most profound things without even trying.

Wow. This is sad.
