In social situations( which would include the fat caliper stunt) your DH maight try and come up with 5 - 10 reasons why someone would disagress with him - before he tries to change thier mind. In other words, practice empathy and sympathy. Once he comes up with reasons - he can decide if pursueing things will make something better or worse. Which is how his job works.
I think sometimes we forget that the people that deserve our best manners are our friends and family members. I find manners are a great way to convey things like you are driving me up a wall, but don't worry , I know I love you.
