Connie, I wouldn't be surprised if you can get a day of funeral leave. In-laws of the parental variety are often included on the list.
Hec, scarey, scarey. I'm glad you're getting Emmett for the next few days. I hope EM stays safe and the restraining order keeps this guy on the tame side.
askye, how nice for you friends! Adoptions can take so long, that is surprising. Still, nice!
Fucking crazy exes. Mine followed me around for years. He never actually did anything (aside from showing up uninvited and acting menacing) but you never know what people are capable of. I hope EM's gets his head right quickly for everyone's sake.
I want to do something really nice for my coworker, like organizing some kind of baby shower -- but I'm not sure about the etiquette for office baby showers and if anyone would think it was weird to have an adoption baby shower for a guy.

My response to things like this is pretty much "screw it, if they don't like it, they don't have to come."
But I am sometimes callous and strange.
Speaking of baby showers, I got an invitation to a baby shower for a coworker. I worked with the woman for
maybe
two months before she left on maternity leave. She has already HAD the baby. Plus, the shower invite/email actually said "Don't forget your gift". Ugh. I'm thinking of claiming that I will be out of town.

Stephen's coworkers had a baby shower for him when I was pregnant. It's a lot more common these days than you'd think. And I know while we didn't have a shower for a guy I used to work with, we all chipped in to get him and his wife something for their first baby.
Joe's co-workers gave him a shower when I was pregnant. We got a $200 gift card to Babies R Us. It kicked ass.
Vortex, that's ridonculous.

I know! It's so tacky that I can't stand it! I mean, I like the woman, but jeez! Actually, she wasn't the one who sent out the email, someone else was, but STILL.
"Oh! I'm so sorry I won't be able to make it!" is a good all-occasion response. Goes over better than "are you freaking kidding me?" anyway.
Mmm... I splurged on lunch and am having a lump crab cake with a green salad with vinaigrette dressing from Daily Grill. YUM!
