Giles, if you would like to get by in American society, then you are going to have to follow our traditions. You're the patriarch. You have to host the festivities, or it's all meaningless.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Thanks gang. The actual day's tomorrow, but I'm not coming in to work, so my co-workers jumped the gun by a day.

Though now that all the sugar is hitting my bloodstream, I may just vibrate my way into the future like the Flash.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

That sounds like quite a cake, Matt. Enjoy your birthday/day off tomorrow!

It's five thousand for kissing, ten thousand for snuggling... End of list.

What a gesture! Happy BD!

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

That sounds like a wonderful cake, Matt! Happy anticipation of birthday day!

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Happy early birthday, Matt. That's a lovely thing for them to do.

I studied Zen meditation for a while. They recommended taking a household chore, and making it a meditation. For quite a while I would take the dirty dishes out of the dishwasher and wash them by hand. It was soothing, despite my roommates thinking I was insane.

Not something I do so much anymore. Cleaning is either joyless discipline, or a quest for OCD satisfaction.

Though seeing my apartment clean and tidy (and knowing everything in the closets and cupboards is organised) is a very good feeling.

I'm both cleaning and organising in my newly-found free time.

When you're racing - it's life. Anything that comes before or after is just waiting.

Happy Early Birthday, Matt. BTW, what local Italian bistro would you be referring to (since there are only a handful here in Memphis)?

Speaking of turning a chore into meditation, I managed to do that with the laundry, which I used to loathe. Fortunately, doing the dishes has never been a problem for me.

BTW, thanks to all for the very warm welcome everyone.
