Oh, look, Aimee frelled up the internet again.
I was just trying to share!!
In 1991 I bought a car. I took out either a four or five year loan (I think 5). I paid it faithfully, and paid it off. They must have not sent us the title when I paid it off. I thought they did. I've spent the past week looking for it.
Now I want to get rid of the car. I thought I'd just lost the title. I've lived in five places during the time I've owned this one car. Not only that, but I took out the loan with a bank called BayBank, which no longer exists.
Bay Bank was taken over by Bank Boston. Bank Boston was taken over by Bank of New England. Bank of New England was taken over the Fleet. Fleet was taken over by Bank of America. We closed out our Bank of America accounts, last year.
The Registry of Motor Vehicles says there's still a lien on the car. There's not, in the sense that the car is paid off, but there is in the sense that obviously BayBankBostonNewEngland never did whatever it is they do when you make your last payment. I think I made the final payment to BankBoston.
I just want to junk the car--give it to a charity or whatnot. I need the title to do this. Where do I start to try to get the title? I no longer have my loan coupon booklet (which was through Bay Bank). Should Bank of America have records on this? Is it a fool's errand to contact them?
juliana - insent.
Should Bank of America have records on this? Is it a fool's errand to contact them?
They should, but it might be. It's truly frightening how frelled many banks' records are, and odds are it was on paper, which means that a) it probably hasn't been cataloged yet or b) it could have gotten lost or damaged in one of the many mergers.
Do you have bank records of payments? Tax returns? Summat?
Aimee, responded.
Yeah, I re-responded now with added message.
I'm such a dingbat today.
No. I have no record of payments. I kept everything. Scott has been paying the bills for quite a while and his recording keeping style is...different.
We've just gotten off the phone with Bank of America. They say they can send us a release of lien letter (or whatever) and that we should get it in 7 to 10 days. I guess then we go to the registry to apply for the title, or something. I don't know. Maybe I'll just take the car apart, and throw away one piece a week, 'til it's gone.
Hee. Sounds like a Johnny Cash song in the making.
juliana - insent again. Now with extra squeeeeee!
Ew. The chicken noodle soup I bought for lunch has a big old bone in it. Ewewew. I like to pretend that meat grows on trees. Ew.
Not a bone. Was a stick.
