Also also, wtf is with this Colombus Day jazz? We had the whole wedding timing planned out for the week I'm there, and now it's all fubared because of stupid Colombus Day. Argh.

In typing this I've realised that my brain cannot spell Colombus. It comes out as Comolbus every time.

Some people are opposed to celebrating it, because of the way Columbus and co. treated the indigenous peoples. Five hundred-plus years later, I say, hey, it's a day off, and that's what conquering nations do.

How is this botching your trip, though? It's not an important holiday here. I'm never quite sure what the UK bank hols are (do you have them in Ireland, too), but it seems to me they aren't that significant, and that's pretty much Columbus day, here. It's not like it's Christmas or Thanksgiving. Is it just that the boy's people had planned to be away for the long weekend, or something?

It's botching things up because we'd planned to go into the office on that Monday to apply for marriage. Three days later we can get married (the Thursday), then pick up the licensey certificate thingy on the Friday. Now however, we have to apply on the Tuesday, which means we can't pick it up that week and have to get it sent to Ireland, which is going to take longer than we'd like. It's not a major problem, but it does mean I can't go to New York that weeked, because we'll be getting married on the Friday not the Thursday.
