When Cersei was sleeping with what cousin?
Lancel.
which direction do we think Arya will be headed next
Melisandre has prophesied that the two of them will meet again, and she happens to be on the list.
Years are years, seasons can be multiple years long. There's planting time and harvest time every year (to some extent) but Summer and Winter are these other things of varying duration. Is my understanding.
Sometimes I am half-convinced that this isn't a world of human beings at all, they're, like, fruit-flies or something. I haven't thought it through thoroughly, but it seems like it might explain a lot.

Oh, yeah? I forgot that. Convenient that Melisandre is heading south, then.
I want to say Cersei told Lancel he was letting Robert get drunk but the wine was actually poisoned but I don't remember why I think that, much less if it was made clear on screen.

But how do they define years? If it's one full revolution around the sun, then the maesters must be incredibly confused.
Why?
I forgot Cersei was sleeping with Lancel. Honestly, I had completely forgotten about Lancel until I realized who he was last night.
But how do they define years?
I thought a year was a year, but Summer or Winter was a period that went over many years. My understanding was that it's been Summer until now (despite the cold/snow in the north), simply because it's not Winter. Winter seems like the big nasty one, and when it comes it seems like there's a period of recoup and rebuilding after. But that's just my impression.
Right, a year is a year, but how do THEY define it? They can't just say "a year is a year." From the World of Ice and Fire book, I think the maester writing it says that some other maester had suggested that the seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth, but the other maesters dismissed that as nonsense. There have been a lot of hints that there's something supernatural driving the seasons, but if they're dismissing the tilt of the earth as being meaningful, and they're not seeing the actual effects of the earth's revolution, and I'm not totally sure they've accepted the earth as round, then I'm not sure what they're looking at when they count out years. What is there in their world that makes 365 days a meaningful measure of time?
Lunar cycles?
I wish to complain about the severe lack of Brienne.
with you on that, -t!
holy shit!
I just assumed they were going by stars to determine how long a year is. They navigate by the stars, yeah? ISTR something about constellations from somebody, but it's a vague memory, I could be making it up. But if I am not, next time The Mother (or whatever) shows up in the same spot in the sky at sundown as it did today => a year will have passed. No?
