The conversations we got in this episode seemed very much like "We're just gonna put these dots here. No reason. Connect them? Why would you think that? That's silly." Note also that Ned was not a king. He was Lord of Winterfell, and the King's Hand and the Warden of the North. But it was only Rob who took up the old crown as King of the North.
So when Melisandre is coming on to Jon Snow because she wants to make shadows, she needs the blood of kings.
