I think I like it. The reveal mostly reminds me of the zombie episode of Community, but I'm sure that will pass with further developments.

There are a number of plot lines where they've given things that are done by/to book characters who got cut from the show and gave them to core characters. I hope they know what they're doing, but I am cautiously optimistic.
