I know my own heart and understand my fellow man. But I am made unlike anyone I have ever met. I dare to say I am like no one in the whole world. - Anne Lister

We watched the first ep of S1 of House of Cards and hated it. We generally dislike anything that breaks the fourth wall. Any reason to continue? So many people love it, I feel like we should, too. Then again, we also didn't care for Breaking Bad. Got through S3 and left it.

I'm rewatching Game of Thrones in prep for S4, and Rory McCann is just perfect as the Hound.

Woe to the fucking wicked.

Yes. The casting on that show, in general, is just phenomenal.

I realize that this comment probably more properly belongs in Literary, but since I brought up the subject of GoT...

I am very curious about the maesters, at this point. We know so little about them as an organization, beyond external trappings. In particular, I am very curious as to why the (apparently) only two even remotely honorable and competent maesters we've seen (Luwin and Aemon) were assigned to the ass end of the north.

I find myself wanting to know SO much more about Luwin in particular. Who was he? Where did he come from? Why was he such a good man in comparison to, say, Pycelle? Did he want to serve at Winterfell? Or was his character what got him assigned there, either to keep him out of the way, or to keep an eye on something important? Did he have a say?

And Aemon. What a curious man, particularly for a Targaryen.

Woe to the fucking wicked.

See, I view the less-reputable Maesters we've met as symptomatic of the corrupting power of, well, power, particularly in Pycelle's case. I think Luwin, much like Ned, was only able to be a good, honorable man because he was so far away from the game of thrones (and its parallels within the church, on the Wall, and at Old Town).

I am looking forward to the vague future when we'll get to see more of Old Town.

Also, I like your take on the maesters. That makes a lot of sense.

Woe to the fucking wicked.

Thanks. I just checked my recollection against the wiki (LOVE the wiki), and Aemon specifically went to the Wall to not only be out of the line of succession, but entirely out of the Game.

I feel like honor, love, and power is the big thematic triangle of the series, with various characters charting more toward one point or another. But also with the different institutions trying to reduce/eliminate one or more of the factors in order to strengthen the others. We've seen the Watch a good amount (which cuts family ties and power outside of the organization), but less of the church or the maesters, who seem to keep much more power, as organizations.

I am working really hard not to gush spoilers and speculation all over the place. "If Jon..." "When Brienne..." "Lena Hedley..." "After Sam..." "ARYA!"

Woe to the fucking wicked.

Big, massive spoiler referenced in the WF.

ISTG, the cast must have some kind of contest or bet about making statements that point big flashing arrows away from Lady Stoneheart. e,g. things about never getting to work with any of the people in the Red Wedding again. And far more often than seems like would be naturally-occurring.

Art Crawl!!!

Ha. I bet you're right DebetEsse.

Episode titles:
4.1 - Two Swords
4.2 The Lion and the Rose
4.3 Breaker of Chains
4.4 Oathkeeper
4.5 First of his name
4.6 The laws of God and men
4.7 Mockingbird
