The reveal that Sam prayed every day kind of felt asspully to me.
Me, too. Sure, Sam was in college at the beginning of the series, but this is making it sound like they'd been separated their whole lives, and not just the four years of college, so how would Dean be expected to know that Sam prayed? Or that he had any kind of religious bent? That they hadn't talked about this kind of stuff over the years? Just not believable to me. I'm not super close with my brother, but we've talked about this stuff over the years, I know where he stands. I know for the sake of the Sammy angst, the writers have to show us just how worried Sam is he's going straight to hell, do not pass go, and he's looking for the get out of jail free card. It made me feel like the writers were looking for a free ride for this episode, too. Not one of my favorites by far, but fun for the beginning. I'm waiting for Dean/magic fingers fic.
Bless Smonster and Amyth for pimping SPN to me at the F2F.
You're oh so welcome!
I'm listening to Renegade right now AIFG.
The LIP WIBBLE! When he calls John's cell in "Home"! How can you not flail??? Are you made of human parts???
This. GAH.
Ahem.
But I suspect that SPN doesn't have interest in the weird for its own sake so much as an interest in things that need killin'.
This.
Sam + prayer and Dean not knowing doesn't bug me at all, oddly. 1) Sammy's the type to pray on the inside, taking a few minutes that look like quiet contemplation to talk to his god. 2) It's not like the Winchesters are known for their sharing-and-caring moments. The belief in a higher power seems like one of those moments for the boys. Also,
I can see how Dean was old enough to be angry, to question, and to be as practical as John would be about it, whereas nobody told Sammy they were only there for the gossip and the holy water.
this.
And we know that there are hunters who are religious men. Okay, so far, we've only met one -- but it makes sense that there might be others.

you know what one of my favorite JA FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACES is? when he's threatening Meg in Devil's Trap. that barely restrained rage. woo boy!!
I don't watch the show (I know, I know, I just want to start from Season 1 and i'm mad at Netflix right now), but I would think that seeing that much evil all of the time would make me pray. Not religious, necessarily, but believe in a higher power of good.

Dead Man's Blood, where he comes crashing through the scrub to save his dad and his brother.
I re-watched half of Salvation last night, because I was missing John something fierce.

Oh, when that muscle by his nose quivers and he's practically snarling, that one?
Yeah.
Favorite JP faces -
1) "Oh, I did." 2) when Andy's mojo's not working on him.
I purse my lips less at Sam's disillusionment (I have no issues with him having a secretly prayerful life) than at Dean's revelation. Execution? God's will? That's not the live priest's God.
That having been said, that's Dean's sort of God--as violent and visceral as the evil he fights. And Sam feeling that this not being an angel meant that there was no God, and that his salvation was only Dean? Also totally in character.
