I'd heard about it being the final one a while ago. I'm not surprised -- I think it would be hard to keep up that conceit for more than two series.

A pilot for a US version "Life On Mars" has been ordered by ABC.
Unfortunately, it's being written and produced by David E. Kelley.

(The name "Sam" belongs on the shelf next to "Jack" and "Carter" for a while, I must say--there are far too many of them in television these days.)
He's also Sam Tyler, which puts him next to Rose Tyler and Vince Tyler (QaF UK).
My bet is that they're all cousins.
