Doctor Who fandom reminds me of the current Battlestar fandom, in that there's a big split between former fans and new fans, and the dynamics pretty much echo between each.
The olders often HATE episodes written by Russell T. Davis (oft refered to as 'Rusty' in those circles). They seem to think he is the devil, set to destroy Doctor Who. Newbies tend not to care for former Who, and are usually less vitrol towards Russell. Although they mostly hate his boy!kissing agenda.
Torchwood I find varies in quality episode to episode quite substiantally, but they need to have a serious cull of the writing staff. The next episode is written by the actor who played Micky in Doctor Who..

Well, I really didn't watch Who prior to Christopher Eccleston - - where does that leave me? I liked the first part of season 2 and then felt it got weak in the m iddle and the end was okay.

Doctor Who, I think, works well most of the time as long as people remember it is a family targeted show with poor production values. Personally, I think the best episodes tend to be when they stay on earth, stay away from the wobbily sets and go for high emotional and/or core character drama. The most expensive eps of Who -- the 'off world' stand alones -- are always the lowest rated ones, which I think is something which collides with the old Who fans.

I'm an old-school Who fan who quite liked the first new season and was well on my way to enjoying the one just past until a tsunami of cutesy smugness and twitchy overacting swamped the show around the fifth episode.

Sorry, sumi, that was me too. I was trying to be more helpful, since I figured if I just said Doctor Who that people would think I was talking about the Series 2 finale, but instead I ended up being less helpful. My bad.
