Was anyone else expecting Kat to turn out to be a Cylon?

That thought did occur to me when I saw one of the previews, I think.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I've been trying to remember, and I can't -- has Jane E ever killed off a major character before?

Because thinking back, her name on this ep is a big reason why I was so surprised that Kat didn't miraculously pull through. (I thought she did a great job, but if I were hiring freelance writers for this show, I don't know that I'd immediately go, "Okay, and in this episode Kat dies of radiation poisoning...let's bring in Jane Espenson!")

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

They'd better stop pulling out that "who are the other models?" clip without giving us a new model. Though I now suspect the guy from First Wave, just because he's a face I know, and why waste a former lead character on just another pilot?

Yeah, I know. Not solid deduction.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

I suspect everyone. But that's not solid deduction, either.

I loved her response, "Your face?"

Our wings are not tired.

Ah, thanks for the RIO/DIO info.

I enjoyed the sappy Kat hero death. Rather more enjoyable since I won't miss her. Then again, we might find she was a cylon and she'll be back in a week or two.

Wished I had the captioning on so I could catch all the hybrid mumbling. Next time.

Skipped to the end of this thread because I am way behind on Heroes and don't want spoilage. Must catch up this weekend.

Jumps back out of thread.

eta: huh, a good post number for the thread

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

They can only do that once and get away with it. Like when they saved Roslin with Magic Cylon Blood -- if they started using MCB for a cure for something else every week, I'd be very disappointed.

So while I hope they don't end up with a Big Surprise Cylon Character Revelation, they have to do it TWICE before I'll foam at the mouth.

What is even happening?

I got it wrong, it's actually RIO, for Radar Intecept Officer. Goose was Maverick's RIO, for example. They watch the radar, alert the pilot where the enemy ships are, what direction they're coming from, how many. RIO's don't have weapons. Pilots, I'm told by the militarily-informed people in my house, fly the plane and shoot. RIOs do everything else: eyes, communications, monitoring ship status, etc.

ETA: Further, I'm informed by BSG fans in my house that in Helo's case he would be a DIO, because they don't use radar, they use Dradis.

Thank you, Beverly, and thanks to you too, Sail. I wouldn't have known either the RIO abbreviation (although I would know RIO the Buffista) or the DIO one, anyhow.

The thing about BSG is that they don't have to do things the way current U.S. military would do it. I mean, there's no reason a Colonial DIO can't do things a U.S. RIO cannot.

Because thinking back, her name on this ep is a big reason why I was so surprised that Kat didn't miraculously pull through. Right? I mean, I was totally expecting something leading up to a Starbuck/Apollo affair, or the actual affair, or something along those lines. I was also expecting it to be lighter. There were nice JE touches, though, and now that I type that, I can't remember a one, but I know I commented along those lines to DH, last night.

I don't really like Kat, and am a little glad she's gone, but did appreciate the touching send-off. I'm still not all the way through the first half of season 2 on the DVDs though, so she's almost nobody to me, in the first place.

Heh. Don't try to hide your feelings, Juliebird.

I am the fly who dreams of the spider

I like to think of myself as stoic and restrained, did something slip out?
