Boxed Set, Vol. III: "That Can't Be Good..."

A topic for the discussion of Farscape, Smallville, and Due South. Beware possible invasions of Stargate, Highlander, or pretty much any other "genre" show that captures our fancy. Expect Adult Content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

The only real plot advancement was the algorithm for locating genetically advanced individuals.

But even that, we didn't really learn about. We were told in one line that it existed, and we saw that it kind of looked like the Matrix, only sideways. We didn't learn why it's worth being murdered over, or what exactly can be done with it, or why.

I was relieved to see that the comic book was drawn by the seer and not by someone outside the story.

DH and I were both rolling our eyes at the comic book. We decided it must have been self-published (and that the artist is a personal friend of the newsstand owner). It seemed the only possible way to explain the writer's name and home address being printed in the back of the book.

But having talked to some of my co-workers who normally eschew genre television, it seems right on for them.

Huh. That surprises me -- I'd have thought that the talkiness would turn non-genre fans off.

GS: If you had to choose between kicking evil in the head or the behind, which would you choose, and why? Minsc: I'm not sure I understand the question. I have two feet, do I not? You do not take a small plate when the feast of evil welcomes seconds.

But even that, we didn't really learn about. We were told in one line that it existed, and we saw that it kind of looked like the Matrix, only sideways.

There's also this weird wavy line symbol that's showing up everywhere. It was in the Matrix-code, it was on some of the paintings in Isaac's place, in the pool outside the crime scene, flyboy's stick figure drawing, and some other places I don't recall. Which makes me go "Okay. Do people with super-powers somehow force random objects into this shape by their presence? WTF?"

It's not a good sign that two episodes in and I can't remember most of the character's names. I normally pick up character names pretty quickly.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

If the comic book artist has some kind of special pre-cog, it's possible he could have snuck a stack of specially-printed comic books into that spinner on that NYC street so that it would reach Hiro at just the right time. So I'll be happy to hand-wave at it for now....

My wank for now is that because he teleported forward in time to the big explosion, then (I think) back to the current time, he meets the artist guy sometime during the intervening time and puts the comic book there for his future self, but then my head goes all 'splody because of time travel, etc. and I can't take it any further.

So far, the mirror image chick is the creepiest for me, I think. Although Claire's injuries are pretty creepy too.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I think "a bunch of dudes with powers have to stop the apocalypse whilst avoiding some evil dude" is a good enough premise for me.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

But she's cute, and has a big gun.

A brand new comic book written, drawn, and published in five weeks? Bwah ha ha ha ha... (Not so fondly remembers waiting for months and months for the final issue of Fray.)

Granted it's out there but still - if a wanna-be Congressman and his brother can fly then I go whole hog with the fantasy!

As soon as he started going all exposition with her, this was my first thought.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

Oh, well, guess I'll clear out the tagline until I hear another line that I like. Sorry about the duplication!

No worries! Seriously, if you want to share it, go right ahead.

HAD planned to ask if anyone knew anything about Heroes. From the imdb blurb it sounds like X Men or Mutant X, but pitched at the lycraphobic non-comic book crowd.

So far it's pretty much a cross between Lost and X-Men. I'm enjoying it so far (the second episode greatly improved on the first, IMO) but I don't know how much staying power it's got. Agreed that the premise is still murky, like, uh, who are these people and why do they have powers? But there were enough moments I liked that I'm happy to stick with it for a while and see what else is revealed.

When Bob asked me what happened I was like, "uh..." because nothing freaking happened!

Well, until the very last scene! I thought that was completely awesome. Everyone I was watching it with let out gasps. (Possibly we're a little melodramatic.) Also, I was glad to see Greg Grunberg's character (and Clea Duvall!), even if it did make me laugh that his Big Dramatic Moment consisted of moving a lamp and opening a closet door.

Yup, us too.
