Jessica ... you have to be wary. According to someone on the IMDB board, the broadcast version on BBCA is quite heavily edited to allow for commercials. To see the unedited versions you need to subscribe to BBCA Free On Demand.
While David E. Kelley is the wrong choice for making a US version of Life on Mars, I think it goes way beyond whomever is in charge. LoM takes its cue from shows like Target, and The Sweeney, and I don't believe there is a 70's US equivelant to those type of shows. What you'll end up with is a variation on Starsky & Hutch and the feeling will not be the same.
eta: Oh and I just found out the R4 version of the DVDs is released next week, so I'm going to order once I'm sure it has all the extras that the R2 version contains.

(which sucks because I'd like to see that) The scene where they first bring in Trent Trent's other excuses after "cookery classes" Sam putting tapioca pudding on his burger (!) The ambulance driver Sam and Annie in Sam's flat The matron in the hospital room (Sam tells her to tell June's parents to talk to her - aww!) Mrs. Trent The ice cream truck Ray on the radio (the way it plays now it seems like they never went to Annie's at all) The darts match Leonard and Sam after he IDs Trent
I have to say, while you shouldn't miss any of the scenes, you should especially not miss the Ice Cream truck scene. The Gene Genie out-does himself. A fricken hoot and a half!
