I understand Leary gave an interview to a girl writing a book on Fandom recently - I was assuming it was Alison, although the name I heard was Laura.

I don't know Alison or Laura. I'm not interested in interviewing actors, or doing formal interviews so there's that.

Mine's just a collection of essays, all about me; BNF, loser, part-time link to TPTB.

Monique - Thanks! :o) My first reaction was obviously defensive however I did understand how Allyson felt and that you are all her friends. It's your job to protect her and make her feel better. Hence the answers were not based on my first reaction. lol. And all that I said I truly did mean.

Allyson - Well then I guess there are three of us so far. lol. That sounds like a great book project! Keep up with it, seriously. No worries my book is different as it's a biography (in the standard sense) but with a HUGE section on the fandom community. Over the years I've met many people (some fans) that did not know about the community. Some of them were just starting to get into Buffy or Angel, and so I wanted to write something that was a "Dummies" style version of not only how to love the shows and follow the cast, but also how to become a part of this large internet family. It was also written BECAUSE no one else had done it yet. I felt that ALL members deserved credit, and now they will have their first taste of it, in my book (and more when yours is released, etc... etc...). Keep in mind that the weblinks offered are a great way to show appreciation for those fans that took the time to make their own sites, write their own fan fiction or draw their favorite cast member. Your book is perfect as it can go deeper into the emotions, descriptions etc... If anything to be quite honest, I think that both books will compliment each other. Again I'm repeating myself, lol but seriously I am excited to read your book and to learn more about your views on this community. I may have been here for over 2 years but there is always more to learn.

kmj, have you not read Gatson & Zweerink? They've published in detail about the Bronze community, and are working on chapters written by the community members.

Michael Adams' Slayer Slang details how the fans incorporated the linguistic nuances of BtVS into the community and popular culture.

If you read Slayage you'll find an assload of published pieces on the fandom, and the shows, including a work by Asim Ali that's pretty interesting.

I think what struck me about your chapter selection is that it's similar to mine. I talk about tryng to save Firefly, the PBPs and WHAR, trying to save the Bronze, how Buffistas stayed together through three boards, crossing the fan barrier and developing friendships with my heroes, blah blah blah.

I think the voice is different, in part because as you said, you've been participating in a Buffy community for two years and are excited and very positive about it all. For example, you have a bit about how to "save" Angel, but by the end, I stopped watching it and was pleading with the campaigners to stop trying to save it, because, hello, not happening. I have a bit about that in there, but it's probably not worth keeping.

I'm a cranky old lady, I love my fandom like I love my family. I bitch about it constantly but would shiv some stranger in the gut for talking the same trash.

Have you spoken with any old school fans? PBPc, or any of the writers who have participated in online communities? Apollo-Interactive?

I ask because the Bronze is the granddaddy of Buffy communities. They survived a shut down, and was the home for some famous scraps between writers and fans...and Pruittgate.

How is that represented? Am I asking too many questions? I do that. I'm annoying.

Some of what you posted I had heard of or researched and some of which I had not. The problem is for my style of book I COULD go on and on about specifics however the book would turn into an 800 pager instead of 300+. That would end up costing the readers a fortune to buy and really it's not that important for me to touch on everything (remember I have biographies, show summaries and episode guides as well - for both shows). Trust me, I would love to, but I finally taught myself to let go and let others tell the specifics (a perfect example would be you). Remember this is a "Dummies" Style guide, which means that it guides. It gives an introduction to each chapter, the how-to's, the links, and fan comments and opinions as well as mine. That's about all I could fit into each chapter in order to get what I was looking for without going overboard on length. If we have some similar ideas then maybe a good idea would be to check my book out and see what things I touched on and what I didn't. This way you can cover more areas, that have yet to be discussed in print.

On top of all of that, I also have the cast/band interviews to include in the book. Because this was a collective pool project, the actors that submitted, did so because they knew this book was about the fans. They wanted to reach out to them as the two shows have now ended, and let them know what they have been doing since. We don't know how long the BTVS/Angel market will have value, so before it was too late, I decided to give them a voice, to give fans a voice and to express myself.

On a side note, if ever you are at a con that I'm appearing at come talk to me. I'll let you take a look at my book (without charging you, lol) and we can chat about all of this if you want. The only one I have scheduled right now is Jacks or Better in Las Vegas (this January).

The more you describe it, the more confident I am that we're not writing anything similar. My book is about what a fucking dummy *I* am, not so much assuming the reader needs a guide to do all the insane-o shit I've done, but a guide through the insane-o shit.
