I guess it depends on how big the class is, but really I read it as "worked for free so far but now may get paid."

I'm working on a homework assignment and one of the questions is "What do people need to know in order to be a good reader?"
I have no idea how to articulate what I do when I read. So, I'm asking the hivemind. What are your thoughts? What do you need to know in order to be a good reader?

I'm assuming that "how to read" goes without saying. Beyond that, some cultural context for the document can be useful. "500 people died of the plague," would mean one thing if it was about London in the 1300s and another if it was about Durham, NC, yesterday.
