Cindy, I'm sure lots of people actively interpret the Bible and think about context and metaphors and so on. I have trouble with the idea that those people are incapable of doing the same thing to interpret a survey question.

If you ask people if God created human beings within the last 10,000 years, 40-45% say yes. That's been consistent for almost 20 years. ABC News did a survey in 2004 where they asked about specific events in the Bible, and whether they were "literally true, meaning it happened that way word-for-word, or meant as a lesson, but not to be taken literally?" They asked about Moses parting the Red Sea, the story of Noah and the flood, and the world's creation in 6 days. All three were described as "literally true" by over 60% of the respondents.

The fact that the numbers go up when you get more specific makes me think that people understand what they're being asked.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

Strega, that stuff scares the living shit out of me. Though i wonder how many people, if asked, believe that the sun revolves around the earth.
