I skipped and skimmed, but isn't the idea here more like "Ich bin ein Berliner!" No one thought that Kennedy was claiming to be German (or a jelly doughnut). They just thought that he was expressing his concern and his kinship with the Berliners in their adversity (or in the adversity of their pastries).

The researchers found that artificial stimulation of semiciruclar canal nerves afforded "remote control" that was accurate enough to keep subjects on pathways and avoiding obstacles while walking blindfolded through botanical gardens.
The article doesn't say how the nerves were stimulated. I'm assuming this isn't something that can be done wirelessly without someone's knowledge.
