Cash, send him back a perfectly nice email, saying that your invoice is in keeping with the salary standards of the industry and the area.
Did you ever discuss money?

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

Was he specific? Is he bitching at your rate, or the number of hours?
He was bitching about the rate. The rate I quoted him was what I was making doing the EXACT same thing FIVE YEARS ago.
I sent him an email saying so, and that I tried to broach the contract issues with him at our last meeting. I quoted the rate to his assistant between our first and second meeting and she said he didn't have a problem with that.
I'll cut a few hours off of it, but I asked him to give me a reasonable counter offer for me to look at. I'll take a bit of a cut since he can't use what I gave him but my time is still valuable.
Or...
Dear Asshat,
My rate as a contractor, I bill at a higher hourly rate than I would expect as an employee, because the tax issues are contracting are substantial.
My ass, kiss
I'll take a bit of a cut since he can't use what I gave him but my time is still valuable.
Oh hell no you won't. You're being paid for your time, period. Right now, he thinks he can get you to drop your rates by throwing a hissy fit. Don't let him.

If you quoted your rate to his assistant, and she said he was fine with it (chances are she knows what he pays contractors and/or employees when he pays contractors), it sounds to me like he's trying to weasel out of paying you a fair rate.
You did all that work, and they wouldn't give you the job, or even offer you a breaking in period, where you'd get to learn the job.

What Jessica said. Do NOT drop your rate.
Also? What Jess said. I started my last response with "Bullshit," originally, but didn't want you to think that was in reference to your time being valuable, so I left it off before I submitted the post. But I was totally thinking it, the whole time.
Cash, what they all said. Don't drop your rate.
I have an odd question:
A woman who cheats on her husband is an adulteress. A man is an adulterer.
What is the "other" man or woman called?
What is the "other" man or woman called?
Homewrecker?
A homewrecker.
