If your pastor preached against the HoYay, then he was perceptive ahead of his time.
My mother's side of the family definitely preached against it, but nsm from the pulpit. That's a thing about Quakers.
Movies were so integral to my existence, nay, to my very survival as a teenager, that I can't imagine going through those years without them. I doubt I will ever know how much of my psyche is based on
Xanadu, Labyrinth, Pretty in Pink, Better Off Dead,
etc.
And honestly, there was nothing else to do in my town, so I saw every movie that came out between 1980-1987. Sometimes more than once.
Labyrinth!
How did I miss that out?
::smacks forehead::
...Xanadu
is one of the most jaw-dropping things I've ever seen. Watched it last year for the first time ever. Gosh. Just - gosh.
Heeee. I found some Chuck Norris icons on lj. I can't pick a favorite - they are all too good.
Labyrinth
Am now earwormed.
You remind me of the babe
what babe?
The babe with the power
What power?
The power of voo-doo
Who do?
You do.
Do what?
Remind me of the babe.
I sang it all the way through the maze scene in HPGoF the movie.
Note to self: The David Bowie love is strong in Bitches. Mere mention of the song from Labyrinth and everyone passes out, unable to post, because of the love and longing for this great man in music. While everyone is passed out on the floor, I shall run off with him, spike his hair, put him in a skirt, and share metallic green eyeliner with him. MINE MINE MINE!!!
Gronk. I slept way too late today, but it was too hot to get up and move.
Dirty Dancing
is a wonderful movie. A dozen different relationships are set up and resolved (even in the case of Mrs. Houseman/Gillmore who really could have had more than those three lines). It touches on class and bigotry without being preachy. You've got emerging sexuality of the two sisters without it being purient. The girl who gets an abortion is not a big whore, she's actually a sympathetic character. -- And its wrapped in a nice sweaty package that unsuspecting hormonal people will watch a bagillion times without realizing how political it really is.
As far as
Pretty in Pink,
I always assumed that about eighteen months later Duckie came out of the closet.
My 80's touchstone flicks were HEATHERS, REPO MAN, BEETLEJUICE, and a number that definitely don't qualify as teen flicks: BRAZIL, BUCKAROO BANZAI, RAISING ARIZONA, BLUE VELVET, SOMETHING WILD, STOP MAKING SENSE. Also, top guilty pleasure 80's flick? CRIMES OF PASSION.
