I think it sometimes can be depending on the car, askye. My parents had a car with one of those plastuc guard thingies that I was cautioned to be very careful about parking because they had to replace it once and were appalled by how much it cost.
I think it normally isn't, though, which is part of why they were appalled.
But I can't remember what car that was, so I am not so helpful, I'm afraid.
I've been thinking about my wardrobe and how much of it is not really me, but I would be left with not very much if I got rid of all the stuff I don't love and I am in no frame of mind to be buying new clothes to rebuild.
I think it normally isn't, though, which is part of why they were appalled.
I would tend to think that it normally is exactly that expensive, and the appalled comes from (a) it's exactly in the right place to get nicked by everything from those concrete parking-spot markers in parking lots to too-bumpy speed bumps to uneven curbs if you tend to parallel park too close to the curb; (b) no way should something perfectly placed for damage be so plastic and flimsy; and (c) no way should anything so plastic and flimsy be so ridiculously expensive.

Tore The Shit Out Of My Old Car's Thingummy, Got An Estimate, And Never Fixed It
I havent been in Bitches for ages, but I want to tell askye that I believe the plastic thingummys might be able to be sort of tied up with a coat hanger if you have a willing mechanic, are mechanically inclined, or have mechanically inclined friends and acquaintances.

Once tore the hell out of plastic thingummy on a railroad tie marking a parking spot while trying to light someone's cigarette in those craxy years called college.
