Happy birthday, Teppy! With lots of cake and love!
Congratulations, sj!
That's all I have. Jake had eighth grade graduation this morning. It was a little underwhelming, actually.
[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

There is a feeling in the air that something special is happening today.
Could it be sj's cousin's new baby?
Could be.
Could it be my last day of work for a week and a half?
Could be.
Or could it be TEPPY DAY?
Must be!!!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEPH!!!!
Why underwhelming, AmyLiz? Was it the ceremony, or just the mood?
Congrats to Jake, anyhow.
Hippo Birdies Teppie
Hippo Birdies!
To Steph, even!

Well, the principal has all the personality of a wooden stake, for one. It was also unorganized and smacked of cat herding. I also think this is part of an old tradition, and it somehow made me sad -- like years ago this might have been the only graduation for a lot of these kids.
We didn't do any of that where I grew up -- graduation was after high school, with attendant pomp and circumstance. The kindergarten and fifth grade and eighth grade graduations kind of diminish the big one, in my opinion.
What?!? It's my birthday? Imagine that!
If you go to Vermont, I'll buy you a birthday beer!
Woot!!!
Thanks for all the birthday happies, nice peoples!!!

I kind of agree. A formal graduation is a bit much. Though I think it would be appropriate to do something to mark completion of one level of school and going on to the next.
A class picnic might have worked for my elementary school class. But rural area in the early '70s -- lots of SAHMs willing to organize, small community where all the kids had known each other since kindergarten (or first grade at the latest).

Goober.

We didn't do it, either. I think I'm of the same opinion as you. Ben's class had to have their "Moving On" ceremony on Monday, even though today is their last day of school (scheduling conflict with the room, or whatever, I don't really get it). The Moving On ceremony wasn't too graduationy, so it was all right. The kids sang four songs. We all watched a great DVD that one set of parents put together, with pictures of the kids we sent to them, from the time they were babies, all they way up through this year. They got a little gift bag, including a yearbook another parent made up, and it was during the regular school day. I think it was just enough to mark the transition, without making it more than it was.
Is Emily around? There is an article about Oakland Public schools on sfgate.com today.
