I saw lots of small kids at PotC: DMC, too. It sort of weirded me out because it was awfully scary for young children but a lot of people just don't seem to care anymore.
I remember when Scott and I went to see Dracula (the Keanu one) years ago, being appalled to see little ones there (not babies either, just old enough to be scared, young enough to not be quiet about it). If I recall correctly, it was a late-ish show, too (9:00pm or after). It's just selfish. It's not fair to the other audience members, and it's not fair to the child. Go see a movie for kids, or go do something else.
I've been seeing the above as "Passion of the Christ" all day.
I wouldn't take them to that either.

I've seen very young kids at R rated thrillers. I don't mind infants (especially sleeping ones). I actually felt sorry for the lady who brought her wee babe into Brokeback Mountain thinking the kid would nurse/sleep through it. He didn't so she got up and left. But when I see someone bring a 3 or 4 year old into a movie with blood, gore, shootouts and graphic sex/violence I just want to slap the parents. I wonder why the theatres even allow them in.
We went to see PoTC last night
So did we! And we brought a flask full of rum to put in our Cokes!

I pretty much figured that. Probably counts as child abuse in some states (or ought to). Sadly, it's probably mandatory Sunday School viewing in others.
People need to leave the Hemingway cats alone. Jeez.
What is scary or gross to an adult is not necessarily scary or gross to a child. And then, some kids like scary/gross things. I can think of some stuff in PotC that might upset some children, but there's nothing that strikes me as clearly too intense for anyone under 10.
Signed,
Saw Nazis melt & 'splode when I was 8
I saw
Starship Troopers
in a theater that had lots of kids in it. The most disconcerting thing was the shower scene with the topless soldiers - the kids in the audience just started giggling and would not stop until the scene was over.
I don't remember noticing any kids' reactions to watching a soldier being torn into pieces....
The only movies I remember freaking me out as a kid were Sssssssssssssssss!, a TV movie about turning people into snakes (shudder) that I saw at about 7, and Poltergeist, freaked me the fuck out at about 11.

there was an interesting article in the Washington Post about Toxic Parents -- parents who allow their kids to do things that they shouldn't, as long as they're there (i.e. kids can drink in the house, young children seeing R rated movies and playing M video games). I know that I don't have kids, so I don't have a dog in the fight, but i was reading the article, thinking What the Hell is wrong with these people.
I went to see Hannibal at an 11PM show, the people behind me brought their two kids. One went to sleep, the other was awake and frightened, was crying quietly, saying "I'm scared, Mommy' and the mother just said "oh, close your eyes, honey". I went to see another movie with a crying kid, I was pissed, because I go to late shows to avoid kids. The usher actually came and talked to the mother, who refused to leave. After the movie, I spoke to the manager and demanded my money back (and got it).
