Kick ass, sara!
I am so obsessed with Jim and Pam right now, I feel like Sophia.
I don't know, I think it was orginally a reference to where the involuntary sailor was likely to end up, not who was doing the kidnapping. Does that make a difference to the level of offensiveness?
Interesting. I dunno. Were the pirates or whatever not actually from Shanghai?
...Interesting. [link] It was all Johnny "Shanghai Chicken" Devine of San Francisco and whatnot. "This terminology originated because Shanghai was a common destination of the ships likely to use shanghaied labor, and because Shanghai (being distant) was an unfortunate destination to be shanghaied for." Carry on, then!
I love this site. IRC is of the suck. i hates it.
Heh. I'm a little surprised I didn't even have the first panicky sinking feeling until yesterday. It isn't that travelling bugs me, really. I'm just a planner. Rationally (and experientially) I know nothing bad happens if I forget something. I've sallied forth with 15 minutes warning for a trip to another part of a country with no pangs. I've had my plans catastrophically fall apart (wrong half of the train, plane never takes off, get forgotten by the people supposed to pick you up in a country where you don't speak the language) and I handle it all well. But the anticipation is killer. So I usually have to short circuit it before it turns into a manic insomnia inducing loop. Or a panic attack over the Atlantic at night.
I had avoided watching The US Office because the British cersion was too painfully close to reality for me. But I've caught a few episodes and enjoyed them. NBC should run a marathon of this season so I can catch up.
A friend did try to throw a surprise party for me once, but I unintentionally screwed his plan up enough that he had to tell me what was going on. And then I almost took his head off. Good times.
In college I attended a surprise party for woman friend of a friend. She had been kept totally in the dark, so in she came about an hour and a half after the party started , extremely tipsy, and dragging along a cute boy. She told us all we could stay another half hour, and then we could get out to let her and Jimmy throw a real party.

They've been running a bunch at a time on Thursdays, but showed the finale last night, so I don't know what's going to happen next.
Often in my group, someone not the birthday person sends out the "hey let's go out for x's birthday" email. Not really throwing a party, but as close as we get.
Jim Halpert is a better imaginary boyfriend than Lloyd Dobler.
But can he hold a candle (or an AK47) to Martin Blank?
I'm with -t on shanghai as a verb. It's got precious little do with the Chinese, except as the destination of the kidnapping ships. It's not even as if the kidnappees were left there.
Fuck. Just got an eBay dress, tried it on, looked and fit great. Or so I thought. Tore it taking it off. Hulklike, right down the back. I have no idea how I could have lessened the strain on it either. I mean, it went on fine! Physics hates me. I'm going to set up my fan and take a nap.
Jim Halpert is who again?

Yeah, I had no idea.
Jim Halpert is who again?
From the US Office which you refuse to watch.
But can he hold a candle (or an AK47) to Martin Blank?
I don't know, because I don't know who Martin Blank is.
