I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

I think it's fairly new, since 2001.

I've never seen airlines limit "personal" items. I've often had a carry-on plus a computer/camera bag plus a purse/small backpack, even recently.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

However, snakes born before 2001 get grandfathered in.

Over here laptops don't count at all, so you can have your carry on allowance and a laptop. And therefore, whatever crap you can fit in its case.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I've often had a carry-on plus a computer/camera bag plus a purse/small backpack, even recently.

That's what I'm angling for--garment bag, laptop bag, small backpack. Well, they can just make me check it at the last minute. I'll give it a shot.

Maybe you had a coat too ? I recall creative packaging to get the number of items down to 2 pieces back in the days before I figured out that as much as I hate waiting for my luggage to appear, I hate schlepping it through the airports on down plane aisles more.

Right, laptops and their cases are personal items and count separately from carry-ons. I mean, they certainly aren't going to make you check a laptop or camera.

What you really need to check is the new weight allowances and the fees for excess baggage over the limit. These just changed (for 2006 I think), especially for intl travel, but sometimes the domestic limit is very low and it is expensive if you go over. It varies by airline.

More info here: Airline Carry On Luggage Allowances

What is a personal item? Some airlines give examples, and suggest that a personal item may be :
Briefcase
Camera
Handbag/Purse
Laptop (in carry bag)
Other items not exceeding 36" in total dimension
Reading Matter
Small book-bag style backpack
Umbrella

I love the vagueness of "Other items not exceeding 36" in total dimension" and the fact that it is not the last item on the list.

I think that they'll make you check the garment bag.

Huh. How tall do emperor penguins get, anyway?
