I considered driving, but plane tickets from Chicago to Atlanta are so damn cheap on Delta I wouldn't have any kind of savings and I really need to scrimp on this trip in order to make it. Otherwise, I'd drive. Lots of lovely countryside between WI and GA, places I haven't been that I'd like to see. I often take a couple extra days with a tent and camp in smaller state parks when I take a road trip. You have to go off the beaten path for that. It gives a better feel for what the countryside looks like than the interstate.

If memory serves (since I was contemplating this very thing last fall), it's about three 1/2 hours. It's a straight shot on the highway so I imagine it can vary widely depending on traffic.
That's not bad at all (pretty much the same distance I had this weekend going up to Vermont). I was going to take a week off and make several stops on the way down and back (Northampton in MA, outside of Baltimore in MD, State College in PA, Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte, maybe New York City), so adding another leg (and a couple of days on one end of the week off or the other) to the trip doesn't seem too bad an option. I had hoped it would be more of a mid-winter trip, but early May shouldn't be too bad even that far south.

I did the drive from DC to Atlanta back in '91-'92. I remember Charlotte to Atlanta as the easy part because there's very little traffic between Greenville/Spartanburg and the outskirts of Atlanta.

If it helps for your planning purposes, I've driven to and from Weston quite a bit for holidays, and (barring crazy Thanksgiving traffic) it's pretty consistently 7 hours, which would mean Baltimore would be about 7 for you. Of course, this would assume that you also go about 80 mph on the Pike/84/91 stretch to New Haven.
