The drive is 350+ miles by the shortest route, which is also the very, very boring route.
The pretty drive up the coast is longer, beautiful and not a good choice if you suffer from motion sickness.

The drive takes 6-8 hours. Definitely without a DOUBT have them take the plane. Caveat, though--it is much less hassle to go from Burbank (BUR) to Oakland (OAK) than from LAX to SFO. BART will take them from Oakland into SF. Las I checked Jet Blue doesn't do that route, but Southwest does.
BTW, this is me we're talking about. I'm taking Jet Blue. I thougth I could do Long Beach to Oakland? For some reason, they don't go Burbank to Oakland.
There is a Long Beach-Oakland flight. Whether that would work for you is mostly a question of how hard it would be to get to Long Beach, which I have no idea about.
The time it takes to get to Long Beach from the city is mitigated by the fact that it's the BEST AIRPORT EVER. It's where I always fly into when I go to SoCal.
That being said, I just drive from L.A. to San Francisco. But I'm like that.

Vortex is coming to SF???
By the time you add in security, the drive is not much shorter, especially if you drive like I do, and I think you probably do, Vortex.
Also, what Juliana said.
Long Beach is awesome. There were zero people in front of me at the security gate the time I flew out of there.
That's how Burbank is, too, but it takes just as long to get to Long Beach as it does to get to LAX from my place. It really depends on the POI of the people in question.
And Vortex, though I normally all about the shunning of Southwest in favor of Jet Blue, for a 45 minute flight with a teeny airport on both ends, totally worth it.
Isn't there an overnight train from LA to the Bay Area?
