The Minearverse 5: Closer to the Earth, Further from the Ax
[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.
To me, it just sounds like these people are stuck in the matrixYeah, that's kind of the qualmy part for me. It could be quite PhilDickian... but I'm not sure that's Whedon's strength.
What would you say his strength is?
Dialogue.
Characters. Giving you reasons to love them. That's my answer. I'm amazed by how many people working in TV lack that talent.
You guys are all alot deeper than I am. My first thought was of Mr. Roarke standing next to Tattoo saying "Welcome to the Dollhouse!"
I think Whedon's greatest strength is making me believe that I know what's going to happen and then completely blowing my mind.
I am reminded of the episode where it suddenly occurs to Buffy that the Watcher's Council needs her a lot more than she needs them, and can in fact call the shots and use them as advisors as needed. I loved that awakening. One of my favorite eps. If this is that, it's an interesting premise, and I'd like to see how he sustains it.
I loved that too. If I had to pick one single favorite scene from the whole series, that would be it.
Wait, wasn't Ibsen's A Doll's House featured in an episode of Angel, with Cordelia playing Nora=Echo? Hm.
I believe so.
