Simon: I'm trying to put this as delicately as I can... How do I know you won't kill me in my sleep? Mal: You don't know me, son. So let me explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

'Serenity'

The Minearverse 5: Closer to the Earth, Further from the Ax

[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.

Never fall in love with somebody you actually love.

In fairness, I've only ever had two bad (other) fan experiences. One person vaguely threatened me for early tickets to a Serenity screening in the UK. The other, I've forgotten. Some of the fans have actually be extremely generous, sweet kind hearted with me, and I met my best friend (Kirsty) amongst them.

The active thing stems back to the UK Serenity site. I was in the fortunate position where the studio ultimately trusted me to coordinate the UK online publicity for the film, which involved getting truck loads of free comics, books, magazines, screening tickets, premiere tickets, TV appearances and more to give out to fellow fans. I had a huge amount of fun with it all, but it made me the focus of the whole thing, which I'm never comfortable with, because at the end of the day, what was my contribution to Serenity? Uhm, nothing. A website or two. Hence why I handed the UK Serenity site to two moderators, and the US site my user account just looks like a normal user.

Anyway, needless to say I'm goin' to be getting Allyson's fandom related book, to see if it provides insight into the kind of things I see online, as I've never understood it fully.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Yeah, exactly. Hell, I hardly do anything for the fandom. I don't write fic or make icons or all that other good stuff people like. I suppose it's the Celebrity Syndrome on a much smaller level. We like people in positions we perceive as higher or more desirable than our own. Or something. It's early.

Never fall in love with somebody you actually love.

That's very much how I see it, Polter-Cow. I've been to one convention before -- Serenity Squared in the UK last year. On the 2nd day, whilst I was very drunk, somebody came up, greeted me, and started asking questions about Firefly. Then about a Serenity sequel, and when it was going to happen etc. I was like, "Uhm, I've no idea, but probably not". And then somebody else came up, introduced themselves, and asked about the movie. And then somebody else. And it kept happening during the convention. Admittedly, it probably didn't help matters that I was stood around looking lost all weekend as I don't like photo things or autographs with actors.

The UK site, yeah, I was able to give a lot of people great experiences (Kirsty went on MTV with Joss, Summer and Nathan, whilst I hid). But only because the studio gave me the product to give away, much like fans of any TV show make banners and icons from the product somebody else produced.

ETA: Although that's not to say all of the graphic designs and fanfic writers aren't talented. Some are, and they deserve kudos.

I don't know how I've managed to avoid the crazies

I love the crazies. They define my world. The (badly spelled) swear words and accusations of absolute power corrupting. Good times. If I could string more than four sentences together, I'd write a book about them called "You'll Never Post Online In This Fandom Again".

I missed most of the crazies on Whedonesque, as I joined after non-registration was enabled. Damnit.

Allyson can blurb you!

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

Now that i have all the answers, no one asks me any questions.

Helps that I don't do the fansite thing anymore.

Allyson, when is Drive airing in Azbekastan?

Me and Jackal got a rather queenie email today about the Drive site.
