vw, I get a roach about once a year (I suspect it's the same one each time, because I'm never fast enough to kill it, and I think he comes to my apartment for vacation every year the way Ohioans go to Florida every year). I've lived here for almost 6 years, and the yearly lone roach sighting, while gross, has never led to discovery of an infestation.
Also, every time the roach reappears, I call the management office to tell them, and they send the exterminator out, and I have NEVER had to pack up my kitchen pre-exterminator.
I also agree on the shorter note to the landlord, and the fact that it's not your responsibility to give them a list of stuff that should be taken care of before the place gets rented. If you tell them the bathroom floor is disgusting, they might get pissed at you, and be rude and difficult for the rest of your tenancy.
Just my .02
Now to hop in the shower, finish packing, and head to the airport!
Oh, phew! Told Emily about caving with the landlord. She's not mad, and said she would have caved a month ago. Now I just have to tell Not!Emily.
Poor Emily is sick as a dog today. She got up and tried to go to school, but just couldn't do it. So, she's sleeping lots so she'll feel better before she gets on the plane tomorrow. Poor thing.
Damn. The law doesn't actually give an amount of time for notice before entering the apartment. But, if it is consistentily "unreasonable," you can file a restraining order. That cracks me up to no end.
The landlord should be "reasonable." S/He should attempt to arrange a mutually convenient time to visit the apartment. If the landlord persists in entering your apartment in an unreasonable fashion, you should file for a temporary restraining order at your local district court.
vw, in my leases it's always been stated that the landlord will give X length of time notice before entering the apartment. I'm guessing this isn't in yours?
The lease states, "Tenant agrees to allow the Landlord reasonable access to the residence for inspection and repair. Landlord agrees to only enter the residence after notifying the Tenant in advance, except in an emergency."
And, the law was stated above.
Well, I don't think you'd be untoward to give them a few stipulations, especially because of Toto. Making sure they confirm the visit with you would be good.
I'm guessing that you live in a small building? So there's no demo or empty apartment they could show.
Oh, no. There's only two units in the building.
So I haven't really talked about it in here, because the last three weeks have been stress like as never been known to me before, but: for a couple weeks I was battling a pissed-off professor who was determined to fail me for work I completed within the structure of the proposal I created last fall and within the time limits as given to me by the student handbook. The professor believed wrongly that I'd completed an internship, not an independant study, and though I corrected her on that, I assume she was still smarting from her own idiocy that, when she entered the grade, she gave me an F. Which I just saw this morning.
Needless to say, I don't fuckin' deserve that F. And I'm three days away from graduation and have my last final today, and just cannot *deal* with this bitch and her issues. But I can't have that F on my transcript, especially when it is undeserved.
What the fuck is wrong with the world?
SA, i'm so sorry to hear you have to deal with such a difficult person. However, I bet it can wait until you are done with your final. Don't let her ruin all the work you've put into studying. (or try not to - it's easy for me to say "don't".)
