What Cindy said. I made one of my prom dresses with boning, and that was enough of a pain.

By "street wear" I meant "corset that covers nipples" or "corset that doesn't clearly look like a foundation garment." I have one that's red with black trim and lacing, and if you can't see it all at once, it looks great. If you can see it all at once, it looks like a cheap piece of underwear. But it looks good as the shirt with a black skirt and jacket.

I wasn't asking from a "what will people think" position, but more from a proportion/design position. I don't normally wear tops that zing in my waist and thereby emphasize my hips, so I'm wondering if the bottoms should counteract the hip emphasis or go with it.

She's ok. I talked to her last night, and she sounded tired, but she was working on her quilt, so she was doing ok.

There actually was a bit of drama. She had had an MRI done that was supposed to help with the biopsy. It was done at a different hospital, and it didn't make it before the biopsy. So, they almost rescheduled it, which would have frustrated her muchly. Her surgeon stepped in, though, and made it happen.

Apparently, the surgeon was pleased with the samples they got, so that's good. I think she's encouraged.

Thanks, T!C! Well, you haven't seen my bed. Meant to change the bedclothes today (yesterday) but didn't get to it. Tomorrow (when I wake up from sleeping, that is).

I've always wanted to make a classic Wonder Woman outfit. I didn't have the chops to do that yet (nor the body). The only Halloween event I was attending 2 years ago was a Victorian dress ball. So I went as the Elseworlds version of Wonder Woman from Amazonia. But I had to modify the outfit somewhat. There is *no* way someone could sit down in what the artist drew on her.

I was scared stiff of making a corset because I'd never made anything that tailored before. I'm a seat-of-the-pants sewer. I've never taken a class. Picked a few things here and there from my mom and my grandma but nothing fancy. The notions for corsets are so expensive (unless you have a wholesaler's license and can buy in bulk) that you don't save *that* much money. And I really didn't want to waste that much money if I made a mistake. So though I'm usually too half-assed to bother with making a muslin, I did this time. Also - I dropped $30 on Jo-Ann Peterson's video on how to make a corset (I used her Laughing Moon pattern). Another plus is that I live very close to Lacis so I was able to consult with some folks there.

It's not perfect. I need to strengthen some stitches that have since pulled out a bit. And I can tell that eventually the dupioni's going to wear away (the dupioni is on top of denim. There's no way dupioni could take the strain by itself). But it is a Wonder Woman corset and I imagine I'd have had to pay Dark Garden 5 times more to make one.

I have plenty of pictures of it in my new Flickr group for gig pictures. [link] I haven't had money to buy new clothes for a while so I still end up relying on this corset a lot to put together looks for gigs. Because I didn't want to be stuck with a corset that could *only* be a Wonder Woman corset, I made a false front (aegis) that snaps off. You can see it both ways there.

Raq, I think the rules are much the same as they are for other things. If you feel you have large hips and feel like deemphasizing them, wear things that draw attention up top. Wear a stunning pendant that lands in the middle of your chest. Wear an ornament in your cleavage. I like to draw attention up top (and away from my hips) but I'm self-conscious about my fat arms and rolled shoulders so I wear a turtleneck that I cut away part of the chest from. When I wear that under my corset, It makes a nice diamond cut decolletage.

As for the bottoms, I have thin calves so I do best with flowing pants or skirts rather than tight ones. Although sometimes I do wear a tight skirt for performances.

Thanks. I got a real sense of accomplishment from that one. I tried to do something I wasn't sure I could do and I pulled through nicely. I look forward to making another corset someday. What I *really* want to learn to make is a corset with cups. Basically, a merry widow, I guess. I'd need to do that to make a Golden Age Wonder Woman outfit not to mention the Lilli Von Shtupp outfit I'm dying to make. (Actually, I looked closely and realized that even though I remember it having cups, it's just a more curved front. Not sure how the costumer did that although I think if I use the Laughing Moon pattern view with gores I can do it.)

I am very cold most of the time. But I did warm up part-way through that gig and doffed the coat. Sometimes the heat is from stage lights. Other times it's from nervousness.
