OMG DEAD FROM LAUGHING
The impression I've gotten is that a lot of the phone record stuff has been happening since 9/11. The fact that it's getting a lot of ink now, just when Bush is trying to get the former head of NSA put in charge of the CIA, strikes me as some inter-agency warfare via the press as much as anything.
Because we already live in San Francisco? Because my records are too heavy to ship? Because I'm still resolutely American despite the current administration? Because it's hard to go to A's games if I live in Canada?
The thing to do, obviously, is totally shun the telephone. I am already ALL OVER THIS.
Your call may be monitored for quality control purposes.
Part of me thinks it's punishment enough that someone in the NSA has to monitor my boring-ass phone calls.
I want the NSA to have to listen in on my phones with my sister when we are reading thru the coldwater creek catalog toether. really, they would find if facsinating.
Here's a good legal analysis of what the NSA's been doing.

"It's illegal."

Still trying to wrap my head around the CIA as one of the last bastions of defending our freedoms, no matter why they're doing it.
(And to be perfectly serious, I think inter-agency rivalries are actually a pretty effective protection. Call it second-tier checks and balances.)

Yeah. I've mentioned this before, but in college I protested CIA recruitment on campus. Now I feel sorry for them.
Bush is trying to destroy the CIA, or at least neuter it, because they refused to tell him exactly what he wanted to hear....
