Emily, I wonder if your kitchen was originally a sleeping porch that was closed in. That could explain the window.
Architecturally unlikely. I'm wondering if maybe that didn't used to be a bathroom -- although the window's too high up to be a pass-through. There are a whole host of mysteries about this apartment.

Hmm... maybe the bathroom was a little porch they closed in with the advent of indoor toidys?
But it's smack in the middle of the layout of the apt.

Enclosed air shaft?
(these are just amusing theories. I've only been there once and only remember it a bit)
Oh, we had a bathroom like that, sandwiched in the middle with a (thankfully boarded up) window into the next room. But I still could never figure out what it would have been for anyway.
I'm very tired. I wish I weren't.

For emergency passing of the toilet paper?
OK, here's a question. I am tired and cranky and don't want to do my school work. Ever. Can I go to the movies tomorrow? On the one hand, maybe doing something specifically fun for a while will help me focus. On the other hand, maybe I should be grounded until I get my work done. Next month.
Jesse is me, except I would have used more "ever"s.
