Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

What do Yalla and Sababa mean?

"Yalla" seems to be a sort of "Hey!" Like, I mostly heard it being used to get someone's attention. (I never heard an actual definition of that one; just heard it being used, a lot, and eventually picked it up and was using it for about a week.)

Sababa means "cool."

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Is anyone else watching The Next Food Network Star? I really hope the cute semi-Jake Gyllenhaal-looking guy can keep getting better. But will they have another fairly bland white guy win? I also hope the obnoxious bald guy goes soon.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Survivor.

Let's see if I can get "I Will Survive" out of my head now. Chances are slim.

I remember a handful of Mahgreb-Arabic words. Some of the ones Fay posted, and "Agi" with a "g" like George. Meaning come here, and used with a hand gesture that looks kinda like our shooing.

Now tagless for your comfort.

My brother went to language school when he joined the Navy right out of high school, and learned Farsi.

Owen's going to the sitter one day a week with out friend's 2 year old son who speaks Farsi (his dad is Iranian). I figure if they grow up together, Owen will at least learn to swear in Farsi.

He wasn't dating her? He proposed to someone he just knew? Huh.

Oh no, he's known her for 15 years. They've dated for intervals during that time, just not lately. It sounds more insane when summed up than it is. I think.

[Supernatural] Hm. Striga seems to be a "noxious weed." Oh, wait: " Latin striga and Italian strega also derives from hedge." So the words are related. Was it an evil plant? Because that would be kind of awesome.

ETA: ack, wrong whitefont code.

I always think Strega Nona. Is that wrong?

Nana korobi, ya oki. (Fall down seven times, stand up eight.) ~Yuzuru Hanyu/Japanese proverb

Strega:

It did appear kind of plant-like when it's first introduced. You see something that looks like tree branches in a window and then it turns out to be a hand. It was nicely creepy.

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

Anyone watching Law & Order du jour ? Writers can't tell the difference between a vulcan mind mold and a jedi mind trick? Bad Geeks.

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

No, I like it. It's very charming.
