Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I don't think there's any reason to assume that tastes outside societal norms require more complex motivations than tastes within them.

Yeah--once you've broken that barrier, there doesn't need to be a depth to it.

Although I'm sure there sometimes is. Controlled cutting impulses, for one. Aesthetics. Whatever.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Yeah, maybe not. I mean, most people's reason for doing anything is probably "because I want to." I know that the teacher at my old job who had big disks in her ears and lip (edit: and tattoos on her face. heh -- I forgot about that) had reasons beyond "it's pretty," but it's not a requirement or anything.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

I can't speak for anyone else, even on if tattoos are more complex than multiple ear piercings, but the sole reasons for getting mine were "I want" and "pretty".

What is even happening?

I see what you mean, but I keep thinking the more complex the act and its consequences, the more possible the motives were more complex.

When you call the consequences complex, what do you mean?

Well, my comment was made about the more extreme sort like the picture you linked, and really, I think Jilli gave an answer. It just wasn't posted when I was posting my question.

In the picture you linked, that man's whole back was covered in piercings. It's got to be hard to keep them clean. It's got to be uncomfortable to sit and lie in certain positions. It's likely that they could snag on clothing. He probably can't reach all the piercings, himself. It would cost more to do. He can't really see it without the aid of mirrors.

In other news, some poor noodle is very upset about the "Secret Lovers" LOTR promo on TBS: [link]

I was just wondering if you were talking about physical consequences (which it seems you were) or social.

UPS just delivered me a CD by an old old friend, and I made the liner notes! Now I just need to listen to it.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

It's got to be uncomfortable to sit and lie in certain positions.

That might be the part he likes best. I don't know if comfort is the operative concept with elaborate piercings.

Emmett's fever has subsided. We did a walkabout in the neighborhood, scoring a popgun, a Hot Wheels motorcycle, a finger splint for him, a new 3 Stooges DVD, Mirrormask DVD and I got stuff to clean out my ears since I've been going deaf over the last couple days. And I flushed a small animal out of my head and it was gross but now I can hear again, huzzah.

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

Need sleep, but that's normal post-con. The con was great, with much good music, good signing(one of the guests does sign language interpretation of songs in a very dramatic, full-body way) and good friends.
